Thank you for your interest in the Scouting Range and Target Activities (RATA) training program. This program certifies you to participate in and create your own RATA program activities such as: the Rifle, Shotgun & Archery Merit Badges, helping run the ranges during camporees, Jamborees, and yes, even your own unit level events. It also supports Council & District level Cub Scout events such as BB’s, Archery, and Sling Shots.

Chief Range Safety Officers (CRSO) are a second level of RSO’s and are authorized to:

  1. Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)
  2. Run the NRA RSO class to create other RSO’s

If you desire to perform these additional responsibilities, then this is the class for you.

Prerequisites:

  • You must be a current NRA Range Safety Officer and at least 21 years of age.. Note that RSO training is offered on 8-18 and 9-22-2024.
  • You must have successfully completed and passed a Basic Instructor Training (BIT) course within the last two (2) years prior to the start of the event. If you need BIT, please sign up for one of the BIT courses that proceeds this event. BIT is offered August 9th, September 7th, and October 19th.

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. To become a Chief NRA Range Safety Officer, you must pass the CRSO course and demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organize, conduct and supervise safe shooting activities and range operations.

Sessions include standard operating procedures, inspections, emergency procedures, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, safety briefings. Students must demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises and complete an open book exam with a score of 90% or greater.

Once the course is successfully completed the RSO will be upgraded to an NRA Chief Range Safety Officer. All courses include the required NRA documentation, instructor guides, student packets, instruction and follow up support
