Prerequisite:

You must have proof of successfully completing Basic Instructor Training (BIT) within the last 2 years prior to the start of the class or you will not be able to take this instructor class. If you need BIT or your BIT has expired, we have a separate BIT class scheduled on October 14th that you can take to renew it.

Course Description:

This training consists of 2 separate courses, the NRA Basic Pistol course (Student) is taught first and the NRA Pistol Instructor course is taught second. These are taught back-to-back in one seamless training event. They both must be successfully completed to become an NRA instructor. The cost allocation is $50 Basic and $190 Instructor. You will pay an additional $15 - $60 directly to the NRA when you claim your instructor credentials after the class. This represents a significant discount from publicly available venues which is to be offset by serving the youth with your Scouting Unit and District/Council level shooting sports events.

NRA Basic Pistol Class: This is the course that you will be learning how to teach as a pistol instructor. You will also have the authority to run pistol shooting events for Venturers & Sea Scouts as well as run Cowboy Action pistol stations at Council events. The course covers the safe and responsible use of rifles: gun safety, parts & operations of different types of pistols, ammunition knowledge, selecting a pistol that’s right for you, safe storage, shooting fundamentals, care & maintenance of pistols, and developing your marksmanship skills. You will also be able to issue nationally recognized NRA course completion certificates for students who have taken and passed an NRA Basic Pistol Course. Most of the class will be indoors, except when we go to the range. There will be a written and shooting test during the class. These are relatively easy to pass.

NRA Pistol Instructor course: This is the class that you will take to demonstrate that you have the proper knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to be an NRA instructor and teach NRA basic pistol and pistol FIRST steps courses. There will be a written and shooting qualification that you must pass to become an instructor. While these are challenging, the training you receive will greatly help you succeed. As a pistol instructor candidate, you will be teaching portions of the basic class back to the Training Counselors and other instructor candidates in the classroom setting. You will also gain experience running a live fire pistol range during the range portion of this course. This will help develop the confidence you need to succeed as an effective NRA pistol instructor and help run Scout Pistol ranges.

Please remember NRA Instructor Courses are performance-based courses. Instructor Candidates must possess the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for this level of training. You do not pay and automatically pass Instructor training. You pay to have the opportunity to pass.
